Jim Lambie: ZOBOP
Jim Lambie’s work, Zobop is an ongoing series dating back to 1999 when the Scottish artist exhibited his artworks at the Transmission Gallery in Glasgow. The title Zobop was coined by Lambie, referencing a style of jazz called Bebop or Rebop, as it was known briefly in the 1940s. Like the rhythm of Bebop, Lambie’s Zobop too visually evokes a sense of unpredictable progressions. The coloured vinyl strips which form his work seamlessly cover walls, staircases and floors, often taking the shape of the space. Their scale and vibrant colours intrigue the viewers to intuitively move with the stripes. Although it’s been 22 years since Zobop was created first, in every installation of Zobop, Lambie gives it new life. According to Lambie, he prefers the viewers to interpret his artworks, access them and relate to them either aesthetically or conceptually. In the past, Zobop has made its way into museums, galleries and luxury spaces causing the stripes to “meet and merge” at the edges.
